Riza Dwi Ariyani. TEACHING DESCRIPTIVE WRITING THROUGH PICTURE; AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 5 KOTA TANGERANG SELATAN IN THE 2011/2012 ACADEMIC YEAR. Paper. The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of pictures in teaching descriptive writing in the seventh grade of SMPN 5 Kota Tangerang Selatan. The writer used an experimental method. The population of this research was the students of SMPN 5 Kota Tangerang Selatan. The samples were taken from two classes of the seventh grade. The writer took 37 students for the samples in each class. The data that the writer got from the research were using the t-test formula. The result of this research shows that pictures in teaching descriptive writing is more effective than teaching descriptive writing using conventional ways. The result is tobserved = 2.24 and ttable = 1.67. Because to > tt, it means that there is a significant improvement in the students? ability in descriptive writing. The research findings are expected to be useful for the students to help them to improve their English writing skills in descriptive paragraph by using pictures. In addition, it gives information to the teachers to know the models of teaching technique in order to make the teaching and learning activities better and more effective.
