The present study examines the influence of students’ vocabulary knowledge
and background knowledge on their reading comprehension ability of the year twelve
students of Public Vocational High School 2 Rangkasbitung. The population of this study is all the twelve year students at accounting program which consists of 146 students distributed in four classes and 53 students are chosen as sample. The study employed the correlational research design which involved administering three types of the tests, vocabulary knowledge, background knowledge and reading comprehension tests. Descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted
to answer the research problem formulations raised in the study. The result of the study reveals that the students’ vocabulary knowledge and background knowledge influence on their reading comprehension ability of the year twelve students of Public Vocational High School 2 Rangkasbitung. The students’ background knowledge gives more influence on their reading comprehension ability than their vocabulary knowledge, however.
