Extensive reading is a course that should be studied by students at semester 5 and 6 at STKIP Muhammadiyah Bogor. Based on the writer‘s experience in teaching extensive reading, the students still have low achievement, low motivation to read and unsatisfied reading abilities. The research is qualitative approach using a case study design and data collection was conducted through interview, documents (journal) and video-tapping. The research has found that the dificulties faced by students with different groups of gender in extensive reading are caused by two factors: internal and external difficulties. The internal difficulties come from the psychological aspect of the students, that is, mood and time in reading. The external factors emerge from the reading materials such as vocabulary, idioms, and plot of the story. The students positively perceived extensive reading is beneficial for some reasons: improvement of reading ability, vocabulary mastery, motivation, reading experience, good readership, information, preparation for future skill, and pronunciation.
