The objective of this research is to investigate: (1) the different of students’ vocabulary mastery between those who were taught through crossword puzzle and those who were taught through scramble words, (2) the different of independent and dependent students’ vocabulary mastery, (3) the interaction between word games and cognitive learning style with students vocabulary mastery, (4) which media is more effective to improve independent students’ vocabulary mastery, and (5) which media is more effective to improve dependent students’ vocabulary mastery.
The research was conducted at SDN Gunung 03 Pagi which is located at Jl. Bumi No. 19 Jakarta Selatan from January 2014 to July 2014. The writer took for the fifth grade as her research. There were two classes at that school. Therefore, the writer took the two classes as her research with 39 students in the grade V.A and 40 students in the grade V.B. The method of the research was a quasi experiment. Then the data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA.
Based on the results of the data analysis, there were five conclusions drawn: first, there is significant difference of students’ vocabulary mastery between those who were taught through crossword puzzle and those who were taught through scramble word. It was supported by the p-value of games is smaller than α 0.05. Second, there is significant difference result between dependent and independent students’ on their vocabulary mastery. It was supported by p-value of cognitive learning styles is smaller than α 0.05. Third, there is significant interaction between vocabulary games and cognitive learning styles on students’ vocabulary mastery. It is supported by the p-value of interaction is smaller than α 0.05. Fourth, crossword puzzle game is better scramble word for independent students on their vocabulary mastery at the fifth grade students of Elementary School. It is supported by the mean of crossword puzzle in field-independent 84.545 is higher than the mean of scramble word in field-independent 75.455. Fifth, scramble words game is better crossword puzzle for dependent students on their’ vocabulary mastery at the fifth grade students of Elementary School. It is supported by mean of scramble word in field-dependent 76.182 is higher than the mean of crossword puzzle in field-dependent 75.273.
