This research attempts to discover how English Club as an English extracurricular program promoted autonomous learning and how autonomous learning sustained student's motivation to improve their speaking skill at SMA Muhammadiyah 18 Jakarta.The research was conducted by using qualitative method and data were collected by means of questionnaires, interview question guidelines, student's journal as well as researcher's journal as the instruments employed in this research. A total of fourteen participants who were the students in the extracurricular program, were involved to participate in the data collection process. The result of this research indicates significant findings of autonomous learning characteristics from the participants. The findings in this research also confirmed that the English Club activities are able to promote autonomous learning by implementing certain teaching strategies. Another finding related to student's motivation that was discovered is that autonomous learning characteristics help enabling students sustain their motivation to improve their speaking skill.
