This research was conducted to response the students’ ability in the skill of Speaking English. Students actually have learned English from elementary school, Junior High School, Senior High School and the University, but they are still weak in how to implement speaking in English. So that, the research aims to improve the ability of student and to see the difference before and after treatment and compared the two types of teaching techniques. The research problem, then, formulated as: Is Information Gaps Activities technique more effective than the
techniques of Oral Presentation? Do the students taught by the technique of Information Gap Activities get speaking skill better than students taught by Oral Presentation technique? The research design used was a quasi-experiment studies. Research subjects are two classes of 2nd semester. One class consists of 26 students and the other class consists of 24 students. One class got treatment technique of gaps, while the other class taught by oral presentation techniques.
The data were collected using two types of tests: they are information gap and oral
presentation. Both tests are presented in the test giving direction on the pretest and posttest. In the table of Paired Sample Test obtained analysis results in the experimental group for the value of t - count = -21.063 with df = 23 and p - value = 0.000 < 0.05, which means that there is a significance difference score of students speaking in English before and after the IGA and OP method use. Whereas in the control group subject also obtained t - value = -10.260 df = 25 and the error rate= 0.00 < 0.05 , which means there is a difference significance of the results
speaking English before and after the treatment with oral presentation. Finally, information Gap Activities is more effective than Oral Presentation for the students in Department of English Education of Muhammadiyah Jakarta University.
