The main goal of the language teaching is to teach the language learners how to use the language to communicate. Therefore, the teachers ideally, prepare and present the speaking material effectively. However, the students, so far, are not able to improve their speaking. They are still reluctant to express their meaning in English. The main factors that make they are to be reluctant are their lack of vocabularies and the method of teaching which is uncommunicative. In line with the problem reason above, an English teacher tried to give speaking material by using technique ‘describing picture’. This technique is one of the techniques used in CLT. And then, besides motivating the students supported by the teacher in learning speaking, presenting the interesting material like ‘describing picture’ also can give certain motivation to the learners. They looked more enthusiastically joining the class. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to identify whether there is or not the correlation between the use of CLT and students’ motivation in improving their speaking abilities at state one junior high school East Lampung. There are 64 students from two hundred and thirty four the ninth grade students chosen as sample. The method used in this research is Quantitative with the multiple regression and correlation to identify how the relationship between the variables. The results of the research indicate the following points: the average of students’ learning achievement in speaking is 61 with the highest score are 92. The students with high motivation do their activities enthusiastically and prepare themselves well so that they can speak or express their ideas in describing certain picture without any repetitions. Both the use of CLT and students’ motivation contributed significantly toward students’ speaking skill. This was found based on the multiple correlation analysis. This verifies that the students’ speaking competence can be improved by using CLT approach and motivating students to speak. It is proved that the use of CLT and Motivation can be used to improve the students’ ability in speaking English. Therefore, English teachers are recommended to use CLT in teaching English in improving students’ speaking abilities. The teacher should do their best to help the students to improve their motivation. Therefore, supporting and arising motivation given by teacher enable the learners sustain in learning, in this case learning how to speak the language for communication.
