The first how the teacher prepared the teaching materials for classroom instructional practices. The second is how the teacher conducted the instructional practices in the classroom. The third is how the teacher evaluated the students’ learning achievement, and the last is what the teacher understood about GBA. Data were collected through observation, interviews and survey of documents. This research was conducted in SMA Daar el-Qolam Tangerang, Banten. To collect the data, the researcher focused on a teacher teaching narrative at Grade XI as the subject of the study. Observation was done in order to obtain a rich understanding about the classroom interaction including the strategies being used, students and teacher activities, instructional material being provided and the students’ evaluation. Interviews were used to examine to the reason behind the activities. Documents were used to get supporting data. Then, the data were analyzed inductively. The result of research indicated that 1) the teacher selected the materials from various sources, 2) the teacher taught based on curriculum cycle recommended by GBA, 3) the teacher evaluated the students learning both during and after teaching learning process, and 4) he actually did not understand the concept of Genre Based Approach. However, this study indicated GBA is effective for teaching writing as more than 60 % of students could write the narrative successfully.
