The purpose of the study is to know and to analyze the relationship between
field independence and field dependence style in improving narrative writing by
students of eighth grade at Junior High School 9 Tangerang. The Population of this research are the students in the eighth grade of SMP N 9 Tangerang 20010/2011 academic year. The taken samples in this research are two classes from the seventh classes at SMP N 9. They are choosen was based on the simple random sampling technique by lottery. The results are:(1)the relationship between Y variable (narrative writing) and X1 (Field Independence style) is 0.830 as correlation coefficient in 5 % significant levels meaning that there was almost perfectly significant relationship between those variables.(2)the relationship between Y variable (narrative writing) and X1 (Field Independence style) is 0.691 as correlation coefficient in 0.000 significant level. In other word, there is a positive and significant relationship between those variables. The relationship between the FI style and narrative writing was 0,830. The relationship between the FD style and narrative writing was 0,691. (3)It meant that the field Independence style is better to use in narrative writing.
