The data were obtained through an analysis of testing the students' speaking skill based on a rating scale, namely the analytic descriptors of spoken language which was conducted simultaneously with the Rosenberg's self-esteem scale; questionnaires to the students and the teachers; interviews with the students and the teachers and observations in three classes including the researcher's own class during group work speaking activities. The study which was conducted at STP Trisakti Jakarta involved the participation of eight respondents comprising of six students and two highly experienced lecturers. The findings showed that the students' positive attitude towards group work activities had contributed significantly on increasing their participation. It was also indicated that group works could be a practical technique to teach speaking skill. The findings also identified that there was a relationship between the students' self-esteem and their speaking skill since the students' speaking performance was much influenced by the levels of their self-esteem
