This study was aimed to investigate the effects of role-play and mechanical drills taught to the seventh grade of students of SMPN 1 Tangerang on their speaking ability. There were 60 students taken from class seven and they were assigned to have pre-test and post-test. The finding revealed that both role-play and mechanical drills made significance effects to the students' achievement in speaking. Based on the data of pre-test and post test by using t-test formula, the result showed that the coeficient of role-play group was 35.71, and the coeficient of the mechanical drills group was 23.81. Both of the tests' result indicated that there was a significant increase in teaching speaking using role-play and mechanical drills. However, it can be concluded that role-play is more effective than mechanical drills.
