The main purpose under the study was to investigate the effects of teaching speaking using classroom discussion and reading aloud technique to improve students' speaking ability. The study also investigated to see which of these two techniques had a positive effect to improve students' speaking ability at XII Language and science classes at SMAN 72 Jakarta. There were 40 students taken from two classes at Language and science classes. the students were assigned to the experimental group which was given the classroom discussion technique while the other group was given the reading aloud technique. The main instrument of this research was a set of speaking tests consisting of several questions such as: What improvement did you get after taking part in this discussion? (for discussion), Where did the story happen? (for reading aloud) the quantitative method with quasi design and t-test were used to analyze the data.
