The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between: (1) the
students‟ motivation and their listening abilities (X1 to Y), (2) the students‟ use of
listening strategies and their listening abilities (X2 to Y), and (3) the combined students‟ motivation and the use of listening strategies to their listening abilities (X1, X2 to Y). Of the 184 students in semester IV at the English Department, Muhammadiyah University of Mataram, only 39 were the sample of this study. The method of sample selection used was cluster random sampling with a lottery technique. A listening test (TOEFL Prediction) and two questionnaires (motivation
(FLLMS) and listening strategies (SILL)) were administered on the 23rd of July 2011 to 39 English students in order to get the data. After being analyzed by using simple and multiple regression analyses, the results indicated that there were no significant
relationships of the independent variables (X1 (students‟ motivation) and X2 (the use of listening strategies)) towards the dependent variable (Y (listening abilities)). Further research on the same study is recommended.
