The research is aimed to find out whether splash games or "Challenge 3" textbook is effective in improving students' ability to write narrative text. the research was conducted to 9th grade students of SMP Labschool Kebayoran in the first semester. Two out of five classes were chosen randomly in the research, those were, 9D and 9E each of which consisted of 38 students. The pre-test and post-test were applied in the research to be conducted in the both experiment and control group. After the data were obtained from the both groups, the data was analyzed statistically using t-test in order to compare the within- and between- scores of the both groups and to identify whether there was a significance different between the mean scores of the two groups. Based on the results of the research, the conclusions were drawn that the both techniques, the games and the textbook, were effective in improving the students' ability to write narrative texts. Whereas, the means of pre-test of post-test in experiment group is higher than those in the control group. With the significance level of 0.05, the result implied that there was significancet difference between the pre-test and post-tes score in the both groups. However, the t-test proved that there was no difference between the two techniques in improving the students on writing
