This study aims to investigate the use of Mind Mapping and Team Game Tournament (TGT) Techniques in improving students’ writing report text ability for the ninth grade of SMPN 7 Tangerang. There were 67 participants in this research; 33 students applied the Mind mapping Technique and 34 students applied TGT. This research applied the mixed method. The researcher used a quantitative and Qualitative method. The students’ pre-test and post-test scores in writing report text were analyzed using quantitative method. The score was analyzed using a dependent t-test to know whether Mind mapping and TGT can significantly improve students’ writing report text ability. Meanwhile, the researcher used an independent t-test to determine whether mind mapping works better than TGT technique. Furthermore, the qualitative method was to know the students’ perceptions of applied Mind Mapping and TGT in writing report text by interviewing the students. There were eight respondents in each technique to be interviewed. The research findings revealed that mind mapping and TGT are effective ,techniques to improve students’ writing report text ability for the ninth students of SMPN 7 Tangerang. The students who applied mind mapping got 82,91 mean scores in the post-test. It is higher than the students who applied for TGT who got 80,35 mean scores. However, further research findings revealed that t-statistics is 1.317. It was lower than the t-critical which is 1.669. The conclusion was Mind Mapping did not work more effectively than TGT in improving students’ writing report text ability for the ninth grade of SMPN 7 Tangerang. This finding was supported by the results of the interview. The finding revealed that Mind Mapping improved the students’ ability to write report text because mind mapping made the students easier to understand how to write report text based on the theme, helped the students to learn the new vocabularies, accelerated the flow of thoughts, developed students’ creative ideas, sharpened the student’s ability to think and write report text, memorized well in arranging a text, concentrated more on thinking and writing sentences or ideas based on the theme in writing report text. Meanwhile, Team Game Tournament significantly improved the students’ writing report text ability because Team Game Tournament was an exciting fun game that challenged teamwork to win the competition. This technique assisted the students increase their vocabulary, arrange vocabulary and sentences, know mechanics, get knowledge, and cooperate with the team.
