This study aims to investigate English Education students' perceptions of what makes an effective English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher. The study explores the qualities, characteristics, and teaching practices that students consider important in making an EFL teacher effective in the classroom. The research adopts both quantitative and qualitative approaches, employing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to collect data from a
group of English Education students. The findings of this study reveal that English Education students perceive several attributes as important for an effective EFL teacher. These attributes include strong subject knowledge, effective communication skills, adaptability, enthusiasm, and the ability to create an engaging and supportive learning environment. Furthermore,
students emphasize the importance of teachers who demonstrate patience, cultural sensitivity, and a student-centered approach in their teaching practices. The implications of these findings highlight the importance of preparing future EFL teachers with comprehensive skills and competencies beyond language proficiency. English Education programs and teacher training
institutions should consider integrating these identified attributes and practices into their curriculum to better prepare future EFL teachers for successful classroom instruction. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into English Education students' perceptions of an effective EFL teacher. By understanding and addressing these perceptions, teacher educators can enhance the quality of EFL teacher preparation programs, ultimately benefiting both students and teachers in the EFL classroom.
