The mushrooming emergence of ‘internationally-minded’ schools in Indonesia in the past fifteen years has resulted in the application of globally recognized curriculum in those schools such as the Cambridge curriculum. Regarding students in Indonesia, there is a stereotype for students in Asia regarding their critical thinking skills. Their lack of the skills is seen like having cognitive deficit because of the culture. Based on these considerations as well as the
preliminary research, the study is intended to see the influence of integrating the principles of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Systemic Functional
Linguistics (SFL) on students’ critical reading ability in a grade eleven class of
Madania Higher Secondary school.
