The thesis was intended to improve students’ speaking skill using video-based supplementary materials of descriptive dialogue at the tenth grade of SMKN 57 Jakarta. Such materials are needed to support their speaking practice in accordance with their vocational program and to give them more practice outside their classroom. There were thirty students of the tenth grade majoring in food production involved as the subjects of this study. This study used classroom action research conducted in three cycles; each cycle involved planning, implementing, observing and reflecting activities. The data were obtained from questionaire, interview, observation and speaking assessment in the form of role play. Then the data were analyzed using simple statistics and verbal description. The former was used to analyze the result of student’s assessment and questionaire while the latter was used to inteprete the numerical data. The use of video-based supplementary materials containing descriptive dialogues proved effective : first, the students got more enthusiastic and confident to practice speaking; second, they practiced independently outside the class using their handphone and laptop; and finally, their speaking skill improved from one cycle to another. Bearing the research findings above in mind, it is clear that SMK students need stimulation and motivation in order that they might be enthusiastic and confident to practice speaking. The researcher suggests that video-based supplementary materials be used in the classroom learning by SMK teachers who have to teach speaking skill to their students. The use of such materials will be effective when accompanied with proper activities.
