English is still a subject that must be taught during the Covid 19 pandemic. Based on the 2013 curriculum two aspects must be taught, namely knowledge and skills. From these two aspects, the achievement of the skills aspect is lower than the attainment of the knowledge aspect. Discovery learning here is a learning method that focuses on the learning process. Students can learn by observing which one they want to learn, students are allowed to find other information related to learning material so that it can be implemented effectively through online classes. This thesis aims to determine whether the use of the Discovery Learning method can improve EFL students 'speaking ability through online classes and also how students' perceptions of online learning. The research model in this research is classroom action research which aims to determine the increase in students' speaking skills after the discovery learning method is applied. The research was conducted in three cycles and carried out in four activities, namely pre-cycle, cycle 1, 2, and 3. Data collection techniques used observation, tests, and questionnaires. The results showed that the use of the discovery learning method through online
classes could improve students' speaking skills. This can be seen from the results of the study showing an increase in the average student speaking score in each cycle. In cycle 1 the average score of the students' speaking was 64.1, cycle 2, 79.8, and cycle 3 became 85.4. Likewise with the average completeness of the students, namely; cycle 1 75.86%, cycle 2 85.71%, and cycle 3 increases to 97,14%. There is progress from the achievement of each cycle after the application of the discovery learning method optimally. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the use of the discovery method can improve the speaking skills of class 9-A students of SMPN 10 Jakarta. The results of this study show the same results as previous studies. The results of the questionnaires in this study gave a positive response from students to the use of the discovery learning method through online classes even though there were some obstacles because according to some
students face-to-face learning was better than online classes.
