This research aimed to explain the EFL students’ perception of the use of online learning platforms, to describe the challenges faced by EFL students when using online learning platforms, and to investigate the effectiveness of using online learning platform among students in MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Sukabumi. This research used a both quantitative and qualitative research design with questionnaire and interview and the selected participants would be 52 students at MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Sukabumi.
The findings shows that the online learning platform made it simpler for students to study English during a pandemic, despite a number of challenges and impediments, including the difficulty of fostering communication between classmates and teachers. Students must acquire technology in order to grasp online learning platforms because some of the applications featured in the platform are unknown to them, necessitating further training on how to operate some of the apps used in online learning. Students also study applications that are included in online learning platforms in order to improve their skills.
The students stated that online learning platforms did not allow them to develop their English conversation skills. Information provided online is difficult to comprehend, and that there are unclear aspects, making it more difficult for them to improve their speaking skills. Additionally, the students stated that online learning did not assist them in improving their reading skills. Students claim that the online learning material is difficult to read and grasp, rendering them illiterate. Students claim that online learning does not increase their listening skills in addition to their reading skills.
