This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of SQ3R and KWL strategies to improve students reading comprehension on narrative text and to find out whether there is any differences between students who were taught using SQ3R and KWL strategies. The subject of this study was 60 students of the eight grade of SMPN 142 Jakarta. They were divided into two group, thirty students were assigned as SQ3R class and the other thirty as KWL Class. The design of this study was quasi experimental because the subject of this research were formed naturally as a group. The research instrument was in the form of 37 multiple choice test items which covers reading English comprehension of the eight grade students of SMPN 142 Jakarta. Further, since the two groups were homogeneous, the data analysis for the post test scores was computed using the t-test. The average scores of reading comprehension of the SQ3R class and the KWL class were compared. The result of the computation showed that there was a significant difference between the scores of the students taught using the SQ3R strategy and the scores of those taught using the KWL strategy with the average score 67.63 for the SQ3R class and 62.20 for the KWL class.
