This research tried to Design English Materials for Maritime Higher
Education Institution ( STIP ) Cilincing. Getting the satisfactory teaching
materials, the researcher performed the following steps : performing needs
analysis, reviewing the principle of material design, designing course framework,
designing syllabus, designing materials, and implementing the sample lessons.
A qualitative methods was employed by the researcher in getting the data.
Some questionnaires and interviews were used as instruments. Some students,
alumni, the institution were adressed by questionare. The researcher enterviewed
the companies and users those have ever received the maritime’s graduates.
Distributing questionnaire and visiting were used in the needs analysis. The
results were then analyzed.
As the basis for the researcher to design course framework, the result of
needs analysis and the principles of materials design were first tool to support it.
The course framework was then developed into a syllabus. Finally the syllabus
became the basis for designing materials.
The English materials for maritime seafarer applied a topical syllabus.
Every lesson consist of different topic such as somejobs in a ship, type and parts
of the ship, ship movement, navigating ship, cargo handling. In implementing the
material adopted integrated skill such as speaking , reading, listening, writing.
When the materials had been designed, the researcher used five of eight
units the course book. Students felt satisfied because the coursebook was suitable
for their field of study. The students could understand the materials well and
interesting.
