This research is a kind of survey and aims to find out and analyze
empirically the correlation between students’ first language reading and first
language writing abilities with their English reading achievement. The observed
population of this research is students from Primary Global Islamic School in
East Jakarta. The sample was gained through cluster random sampling. This
research has 3 variables which are divided into 2 independent variables
(students’ first language reading ability and first language writing ability) and 1
dependent variable (students’ English reading achievement).
The collection of the data is done by objective and written test for
independent and dependent variables. The gained data was then analyzed by
using correlation technique and multiple regressions. Previously, the prerequisite
test such as normality and linearity test must be done. The results of this research are: 1) There are significant correlation of students’ first language reading and student’s first language writing abilities altogether with students’ English reading achievement as proved by F observed = 124.033 and Sig.= 0.000; 2) There is a significant correlation between students’ first language reading ability with students’ English reading achievement as proved by t observed = 11.261 and Sig.= 0.000; 3) There is a significant correlation between first language writing ability with students’ English reading achievement as proved by t observed = 4.497 and Sig.= 0.000. The results of this research in the previous paragraph means to improve students’ English reading achievement, English teachers need to optimize their first language reading ability and writing abilities, by endorsing student to do
various exercises in scope of language elements. Furthermore, make a connection
of first language as a supportive agent for achieving English as foreign language.
