This classroom action research is aimed at investigating the
effectiveness of implementing short-muted movie in teaching speaking at the
twelfth science 1 grade students of SMAN 11 Pandeglang – Banten. The
research focuses on solving the problems deal with speaking together with
finding the alternative way to increase students’ speaking mastery. The writer,
who functioned as the class teacher, work collaboratively with the other two
teachers in eliciting the data by conducting observations, giving questionnaires
and speaking test. The participants of the research were 31 students of twelfth
grade of science program Having done the research, The writer found a significant enhancement, particularly students’ active involvement, and change from getting afraid of communicating in English to be more active to participate in English speaking class. There was also improvements on the results of formative test. In the pre cycle, 19 students could not reach the minimum standard competency. The
improvement was seen on the first to the second cycle. In the first cycle, 25
students could reach above the minimum standard competency and at the
second cycle was 31 students (or 100% of them) could reach above the
minimum standard of competency. The research revealed that short-muted
video is considered to be effective to improve students’ speaking mastery.
Based on the result of this research, the writer offers some recommendations as follows; First, teachers are encourages to use short-muted video when teaching speaking. Second, teachers have to prepare the teaching plans well before doing teaching. Third, teachers are recommended to use media when teaching because media may help them to have the objective and the process achieved effectively. Media will also be promote students’ interest to the lesson
