This study aims to investigate the pattern of reading strategy employed by
low, middle, and high level EFL students. This study used a case study method with
retrospection and interview analysis. The participants were fifteen junior high
school students from Tangerang. This study focuses on three types of reading
comprehension including main idea, supporting idea, and inference. The data were
analyzed based on the retrospection and interview results. The study reveals four
findings related to the research questions. First, the reading strategies employed by
low level EFL students that mostly used getting idea quickly and translating.
Second, the reading strategies employed by middle level EFL students that mostly
used getting idea quickly and highlighting. Third, the reading strategies employed
by high level EFL students that mostly used getting idea quickly and translating.
Finally, the effects of the reading strategies to the reading comprehension that
showed positive effect regarding to the use of getting the idea quickly. To conclude,
the use of getting the idea quickly strategy improved significant effect for EFL
students.
