This thesis aims to find out the strategies or procedures applied by the students and the difficulties they found in translating an Indonesian folktale into English. Further, it also investigates the students’ expectations related to the teaching-learning process in the Indonesian – English translation class. The study involves eight students who take Indonesian – English class at faculty of language and literature of UNAS. This study applied descriptive qualitative method since the writer collects the data by doing observation, interview, taking some documents such as the students’ translation work, and spreading a semi-structured questionnaire. The theory used by the writer in analyzing the students’ translation strategies or procedures are based on the theory proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (in Munday, 2001; in Venuti, 2004) and Newmark (1988). The study reveals that the students applied eleven translation strategies or procedures namely Literal Translation (22%), Transposition (19%), Reduction (15%), Couplets (11%), Paraphrase (11%), Transference (7%), Synonymy (7%), Functional Equivalent (4%), Expansion (4%), Naturalization (0,25%), Modulation (0,12%). Moreover, in terms of difficulties, the students find that the main problems or difficulties are grammar and vocabulary which relates to the lexical unit such as the cultural terms. In terms of the students’ expectation, it was also found that the students hope the teaching-learning process in the Indonesian – English translation class can be more attractive, interesting, and it is supported by the appropriate teaching materials.
