This research aims to discover whether there was a significant effect of haiku and cinquain on students’ skill of writing poetry. This research used experimental research design. The population of the research was 210 students from six classes of 12th grade students of SMAN 63 Jakarta in academic year 2015/2016. The researcher used proposed sampling technique which took two classes as the experimental and control class and one class for the try out class. The data collection was done by giving the pre-test and post-test of writing poetry. The data analysis consists of the research instrument test with the validity and reliability test. Before the treatment, the students were given a pre-test. After having 6 meetings for the treatment, the students were given a post-test. The data gained from the pre-test and post-test were collected and analyzed by using two ways ANOVA to test the hypotheses of the research. The result showed that there was a significant difference improvement in writing poetry obtained by the students after they received treatments. The scores they received in the post-test was higher than the pre-test scores. This shows that the haiku and cinquain are "effective" in improving students' skills in writing poetry. Based on that result, it can be concluded that haiku and cinquain can be used as an alternative technique in motivating students to write poetry in interesting way.
