The objectives of this research are to investigate (1) kinds of pragmatic
expressions which are taught by the teacher, (2) various kinds of pragmatic
expressions which are used by the students when performing role plays and (3)
the ways which teachers do to raise students’ awareness of pragmatics in role
plays. This research was conducted to investigate the application of pragmatic in role plays of students of SMAN 5 Tangerang Selatan in 2016/2017 academic year.
This study used qualitative approach. The sample size investigated was 117
students in three classes (X2, X3 and X4). There were two teachers who had been
observed also in this research. The data was taken by observation, questionnaire
and interview. The result revealed that first, two teachers did differently in
introducing pragmatic expressions; pragmatic expressions which were delivered b
teacher of class X2, were not as various as pragmatic expressions which were
delivered by teacher of X3 and X4. Second, students produced various pragmatic
expressions in roleplays; pragmatic expressions which were produced by students
of X2, were not as various as pragmatic expressions which were delivered by
students of X3 and X4, in role plays. Finally, the ways teachers raised students’
pragmatic awareness were different; teacher of X2 had raised students’ pragmatic
awareness, but it was not as well as what teacher of X3 and X4 had done. The
questionnaire and interview resulted that teacher of X2 did not have enough
knowledge and competence in pragmatics. On the other hand, the teacher of X3
and X4 had enough competence in pragmatics and tried to support her students to
speak in context.
