This paper addresses the need of designing the syllabus for secretary students at the eleventh year of SMK Widya Yahya in Pringsewu Lampung in the absence of specific syllabus in that school. The focus of the research is aimed to investigate on how an English syllabus for the eleventh year students of secretary at SMK Widya Yahya Pringsewu, Lampung is related to the workplace and how the researcher
implements English syllabus for the eleventh year students of secretary at SMK Widya Yahya Pringsewu Lampung related to the workplace. The study was implemented through two phase interview to eight students
participant, two teacher participants, two past learners (alumni) and two
secretaries from the workplace. The findings from these interviews showed that
student’s participants are aware that English Business Correspondence is the most
important skill to be equiped for a secretary. In addition, they considered that
having the ability in telephoning skill is an added value to be success at the job
recruitment in the future. However, in the implementation, students found
difficulties to write a good formal letter as they have limited language input to
comprehend the learning.
