The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of using mind mapping and verbal outlining technique in students’ ability of writing a descriptive text involving the learning style of the First Grade Students of SMA Dharma Karya UT Pondok Cabe Ilir. This research uses quasi experimental design with 2x2 factorial. Population is all the first grade students at SMA Dharma Karya UT. Sample as many as 44 students taken by using cluster sampling technique. The 44 students are divided into two classes. In the first experimental class taught by using mind mapping technique, there are 22 students divided into 11 visual learners and 11 verbal learners. For the second experimental class taught by using verbal outlining technique, there are also 22 students divided into 11 visual learners and 11 verbal learners. Data is collected by giving two instruments: writing test and questionnaire. Writing a descriptive test is for measure the students’ ability of writing a descriptive text. Questionnaire is to classified visual and verbal learner. The data obtained is analysed by using Two-Way ANOVA design.
