Nurul Afiati: Teaching Vocabulary for Mentally Retarded Children Through

Prof. DR. HAMKA, 2014.The objectives of this research are: 1) To portray how
teaching vocabulary through collaborative activities can be implemented in class of
mentally retarded children,2) To discover the responses of mental retarded learners
toward teaching vocabulary through collaborative activities.The research was
conducted at SLB C Budi Daya, which is located at Jl Raya Bogor, KM 24,5
Cijantung, Jakarta Timur. The eight grade class consist of 12 twelve students; EMRs,
TMRs and Autistics. The method of the research was descriptive qualitative. The
collaborative activities in this study were blended activities using Total Physical
Respond (TPR), realias, and practice and repetition which is appropriate for mental
retarded learners due to their uniqueness. The data collecting techniques were
obtained from document; observation sheets, interviews, questionnaire, video and
field notes. Based on the finding of the research, the collaborative activities can be
implemented in class of mentally retarded children and the responses were positive
since it made the learners active and enjoy the learning process. In choosing the
themes, teacher must consider the appropriate ones to mental retarded learners. In
sum up, the collaborative activities in teaching vocabulary can promote and improve
mental retarded learners in learning English.
