This study was conducted at SMKN 1 Jakarta in April 2017. The Objective of the research was to find the empirical evidence of the most typical types and sources of errors found in the recount writing of the tenth grade students of SMKN 1 Jakarta in the 2016/2017 Academic Year. The samples of this study were 29 students. In this study, the method used was descriptive analytical method based on the grammatical aspects. To differentiate between errors and mistakes, the writer analyzed the students’ writing sheet by marking the mistakes. Then, the writer gave back the writing sheet which had been marked to the students to be revised. The study showed the most typical errors made by students were in Word Choice with 20.92%, Omit a Word with 18.74%, and Add a Word with 12.64%. Then followed by Capitalization with 12.46%, Verb Tense with 7.23%, Punctuation with 6.62%, Spelling with 4.79%, Word Order with 3.57%, Word Form with 3.31%, Singular & Plural with 2.89%, Meaning not Clear with 2.17%, Run on Sentence with 1.73%, Article with 1.48%, and Incomplete Sentence with 1.39%. Besides, the most typical source of error made by the students was Intralingual error with 67.40%. Then, it was followed by Interlingual error with 32.60%. After seeing the result of the study, the writer concluded that the students had problem in vocabulary, capitalizing word, and verb tense. The teacher should give further explanation and exercise to build up the students’ understanding in how to produce good sentences in their writing so their writing can be meaningful.
