YULIA SHARA. Student identity number: 1001065237. Error Analysis of the Students’ Recount Writing of the Tenth Grade at SMA Negeri 103 Jakarta in 2013-2014 Academic Year. The paper: Jakarta. The Study Program of English Education, The School of Teacher Training and Education, The University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka, 2015. The population of this study was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 103 Jakarta in the 2013-2014 Academic Year. The writer took one class which consisted of 34 students. However, the writer only took 32 students’ writings, because one student did not come on the first and second meeting, and another one did not meet the requirements. The objective of the study was to find out the students’ types of error in their writings and its causes. The writer also would like to offer some ideas on how to cope with such errors. The writer hopes it can give information for teacher to do a proper remedial teaching for improving the students’ skill in writing. Also, for students, they were expected not to make the same errors. The method employed in this study was a descriptive analysis. The writer administered a guided task on recount writing. To differentiate between errors and mistakes, the writer asked the students do the same task on two different days; therefore, the students wrote some paragraphs based on the guidance asked by the writer. The study showed that the most typical errors done by the students was in word choice (16.59%), add a word (16.11%), punctuation (14.18%), verb tense (12.02), capitalization (8.65%), word form (6.97%), and omit a word (6.01%). The smallest ones were in article (5.29%), spelling (5.05%), word order (2.88%), meaning not clear (2.64%), singular-plural (1.68%), incomplete sentence (0.97%), and run-on sentence (0.96%). It indicates that the teacher should give more practice in writing by concerning on the grammatical aspects, so that the students will not make the same things in their future writing.
