The objectives of this study are to know the types and the sources of errors in descriptive writing, and also to know the appropriate remedial in overcoming the students’ writing of the fourth semester of English programme students at the University of Muhammadiyah Prof. DR. HAMKA Jakarta. There are 203 students who are distributed into 6 classes. The writer only took one class which consists of 35 students as the sample. The sampling technique used was Purposive Sampling Technique.The writer used descriptive method with the test technique in this research by taking the data twice.
Based on calculation, the writer concludes that the most typicaltypes of errors made by students are in capitalization (20.78%), word choice (17.21%), spelling (14.54%), add a word (11.87%), omit a word (11.28%), singular-plural (7.42%), punctuation (5.93%), word order (3.86%), word form and verb tense (2.67%), article and meaning not clear (0.59%), run-on sentence and incomplete sentence ( 0.29 %). In accordance to the above typical errors, the writer found out that the most sources of errors made by students are in carelessness (41.83%), first language interference (30.87%), and translation (27.29%).
To solve errors made by the students in the research, the writer suggests that in capitalization the teachers should give the examples of writing in the right capital letter, in word choice the teachers should exposethe Englishwriting which is made by the native speaker, and in spelling the teachers should also expose the words in right writing. The benefit of the research result is to give an information of the typical errors and the sources of errors which are made by the students and to give an appropriate remedial teaching to eliminate the students’ errors.
