The objective of this study was to find out whether there is a relationship
between students‟ learning motivation and their speaking skill on the eleventh
grade of SMKN 38 Jakarta. The method of this study is a survey method.
The population of this study consist of 4 classes, they are Tata Busana
consists of 1 class, Tata Boga consists of 2 classes, and Perhotelan consists of 1
class. The writer assumes that the average scores of the students‟ ability are quite
the same, so the writer took the sample randomly, they are 18 students in
Perhotelan class, and 18 students in Tata Busana class. In this study, the
instruments used for receiving the data were in the form of non test, it is a
questionnaire test for giving of Likert Scale Rating, the point of positive
statement/question is 5 – 1, and the point of negative statement/question is 1 – 5
for students‟ motivation, and a speaking test for the students‟ speaking skill. The
scores were calculated by using Pearson‟s Product Moment.
From the calculation of Pearson‟s Product Moment, the result of
correlation ro = 0.98, n = 32, rt = 0.35 with df-30 in 0.05 significant level. In other
words, there is a significant relationship between students‟ learning motivation
and their speaking skill.
