This research is attempted to discover the relationship between the independent variable (students‟ English learning motivation) and dependent variable (students‟ reading comprehension). The tested hypothesis is whether there is a significant relationship between students‟ English learning motivation and students‟ reading comprehension. It was conducted in May at the tenth grade of SMAN 57 Jakarta. The writer took the data by using test instrument and did the research with a survey method. The instrument of this research are motivation questionnaire and reading test. The writer used Pearson‟s Product Moment Correlation to calculate the correlation between X variable and Y variable.
The result of the analysis shows that the data of the two variables have normal distribution using Chi Square test. The result of normality of the data distribution (X variable) χ2o = 2,26 is smaller than χ2t = 7,81. The result of normality of the data distribution (Y variable) χ2o = 2,02 is smaller than χ2t = 7,81. It can be concluded that sample come from the population which are normally distributed. In the scattered diagram, the data scores are closed the data line it can be seen that the data are linear.
From the data analysis, it is known the result of r-observed = 0,79 is higher than r-table= 0,33. As ro > rt, it can be said that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted. It means that there is relationship between students‟ English learning motivation and their reading comprehension. To know whether how far the relationship X variable and Y variable are, it is used t-test formula. From the t-test, it is known the result of t-observed = 7,40 is higher than t-table= 1,70. As to > tt it can be said that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted. So, there is a significant relationship between students‟ English learning motivation and students‟ reading comprehension on the tenth grade at SMAN 57 Jakarta. Practically through this study the writer hoped that her research will be useful for those who concern with English teaching especially in motivation and reading comprehension. It can become input to all English teachers, to develop better ways of English teaching program.
