The study is aimed to find out the empirical evidence of how well the
items have constructed the English Summative Test for the first semester of the
eighth grade students of SMP Mabad 69 Tangerang Selatan. The test was
administered in December, 2014. The summative test consists of 45 items 40
multiple choice and 5 essays. The respondents of the study were the students of
two classes. Class VIII-1 consisted of 30 students and VIII-2 also consisted of 30
students. So, there were totally 60 students as the population of respondents. From
this population, the writer took out 25% (15 students) who got highest scores for
the upper group, and 25% (15 students) who got the lowest scores for the lower
group.
Based on the calculation results from the difficulty level, the writer has
got the data that the English summative test was good enough because there have
been 13 items in test or (32.5%) are classified as the easy items, 21 items in the
test or (52.5%) are classified as the medium items, and 6 items in the test or (15%)
are classified as the difficult items. Therefore, it can be concluded that the test
composition is good enough because there are 21 items or (52.5%) which can
fulfill the classification as the medium items.
In the tabulation of discrimination index, the composition of the test
shows: 5 items in the test or (12.5%) are classified as the poor items, 9 items or
(22.5%) are classified as the bad items, and 26 items in the test or (65%) are
classified as the satisfactory (17 items) and good (9 items) that can be maintained.
Thus, it means that 9 items or (22.5%) are discarded, 5 items or (12.5%) are
revised and 26 items or (65%) can be maintained.
