This research was conducted at SMAN 103 East Jakarta in the tenth grade
students that consists of 30 students. The objective of this research is to find the
empirical evidence of the research, whether the tenth grade students of SMAN 103
Senior High School make the types and sources of error in descriptive writing or not.
The writer uses a descriptive method. The writer administered a guided task
on descriptive writing. To differentiate errors from mistakes, the writer analyzed the
students‟ errors in their descriptive text writing and present the result of the analysis
descriptively.
The study showed that the most typical errors done by the students was in
omit a word with 14.87 %, next punctuation with 14.87 %, add a word 14.05 %,
word choice with 12.21%, capitalization with 9.78 %, verb tense with 8.53%, and
word order 5.29%. The smallest typical errors done by the students was in meaning
not clear with 3.26 %, spelling with 1.83%, word form with 1.83 %, run-on sentence
with 1.22%, incomplete sentence with 0.61 %, and article with 0.61%. In addition,
the most sources of error done by the students was in intralingual transfer with
55.00%, context of learning with 27.80%, interlingual transfer with 14.80%, and
communication strategies with 2.43%. The errors are mostly made because of
students‟ lack of grammar rules, they also lack of knowledge of target language. It
indicates that most of students need more treatment and remedial from the teacher in
English writing and the students of SMAN 103 Jakarta still need more practice in
order to develop their writing skill.
