The aim of this research is to get the empirical evidence of the relationship between simple past tense mastery and writing recount text ability. This research was held on SMPN 246 East Jakarta at the 8th grade students’ classes in the second semester academic year the 2014-2015. The populations are 4 classes. The writer assumed that the average score ability if each class are quite the same. So, the writer chooses one class as a sample that is VIII C. This class consists of 30 students.
The finding of the research shows that students’ simple past tense mastery gets average 65.6 and students’ recount text writing gets average score 67.7 after calculating and analyzing the data, the result shows robserved is higher than rtable (robserved = 0,98 > rtable = 0,361). So it can be concluded that there is a relationship between simple past tense mastery and writing recount text ability of the eighth grade students at SMPN 246 East Jakarta. The data also shows that tobserved= 26.18 and ttable = 1.70 , it means that to is higher than ttable. So it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between simple past tense mastery and writing recount text ability of the eighth grade students at SMPN 246 East Jakarta. The regression analysis shows that the simple past tense mastery gives contribution in writing recount text ability. The empirical influence can be described as follow Ŷ = -10.01 + 1.14𝑿 .
So it can be concluded that the students’ simple past tense mastery takes the importance and positively influencing to the students’ writing recount text ability of the eighth grade students at SMPN 246 East Jakarta. The benefit for teacher is this research can be reference to improve the quality of teaching and knowing the extent of the students’ simple past tense mastery and the students’ writing recount text ability.
