The purpose of the research is to find empirical evidence of whether or not diary is effective in teaching students writing of recount text. The research was done from December 9th 2014 until January 23rd 2015. The research uses two classes as the experiment and control class. The population of the study is the tenth grade students of SMAN 3 Tangerang in the 2014/2015 Academic Year.
There are six meetings during the experiment research. The writer uses diary writing as the treatment in class. Students are asked to write the recount text on a diary. The writing is based on students’ experiences. After implementation of the treatment, the writer gets the data using test instruments which is pre-test and post-test. Pre-test is given before the treatment and post-test is conducted after the treatment. This research is a kind of quantitative research which analyzed the data using the normality distribution data and the t-test.
Based on the result of data analysis, there is a significant difference by using t-test. It shows that the t-value of the observed is 4.16 higher than t-value of level significant (t-table) in 0.05 is 1.67. It means that diary can be used in teaching writing recount text to the tenth grade students of SMAN 3 Tangerang. In brief, through this research the writer hopes that it will be useful for everyone who concerned with English teaching especially on writing. The teacher can use diary writing as one of the alternative techniques in teaching writing recount text.
