LIONORA OKTARIANI. NIM: 1101065051. An Error Analysis on the Students Descriptive Writing of The Tenth Grade at The Second Semester at SMAN 64 East Jakarta in The 2014/2015 Academic Year. A Paper. Jakarta: The Study Programme of English Education, The School of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. HAMKA, Jakarta 2015. The objective of this study is to find out the most typical errors and sources of errors made by the students at SMA Negeri 64 Jakarta. The school is located in Cipayung, Jakarta Timur. There are seven classes; the total of the students are 250. The sample taken for this research is class X IPS 3 which consists of 35 students by using cluster random sampling. The writer assumes that the students have the same ability in learning English. The writer uses a writing task as an instrument for getting data. After getting data, the writer analyzes and classifies the errors, the writer describes, explains, and evaluate them. In analyzing and classifying the students errors, the writer uses Betty Azar's classification. From the calculation, the writer gets the data that the typical errors found on students writing are errors in word choice (18,85%), run-on sentence (17,21%), add a world (15,16%), punctuation (15,16%), omit a word (9,83%), verb tense (7,78%), spelling (7,78%), capitalization (4,91%), singular-plural (1,22%), word order (0,81%), word form (0,40%), and article (0%). After analyzing and calculating the students errors, the writer continues to analyze the sources of errors. In analyzing the sources of errors on the students writing, the writer uses Richard's classification and gets the data such as incomplete application of rule development (38,11%), ignorance of rule restrictions (27,05%), overgeneralization (25,82%), and false concept hypothesized (9,02%). Based on the data analysis, it shows that the most typical errors are word choice, run-on sentence, and add a word. It shows that the main source of error found on the students writing is incomplete application of rule development in which the grammar rules are difficult to be understood by the students, so they often go wrong in applying the rules. This problem can be solved by providing more treatments to the students. the teacher needs to provide detailed explanation and more practices for the students related to the types of sentences an vocabulary. For the students, they have to pay attention seriously on the teacher's explanation, so they could avoid doing the error in the future.
