Experimental activities towards the Relativistic HeavyIon Collider (RHIC) were initiated at the beginning of the 1990s. In the middle of the 1990s the PHENIX proposal was approved as one of two major experiments at RHIC. I will describe how a typical scientist considered physics, the detector and society in those days.
