AGHITYA FADILLAH. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DEBATE IN TEACHING SPEAKING TO THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK ARIYA METTA NEGLASARI, TANGERANG IN THE 2013/2014 ACADEMIC YEAR. Paper. July 2013 The aim of this research is to find the empirical evidence of whether or not debate is effective in teaching speaking for the eleventh grade students of SMK Ariya Metta Tangerang. The writer used a pre-experimental method. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of SMK Ariya Metta Tangerang, Banten. They were 102 students which were distributed into three clasess, class XI AK 1, XI AK 2, and XI AP. The samples were taken from one class of the eleventh grade by using purposive cluster sampling. The writer took 34 students as the subject samples. The data that the writer got from the research were using the t-test formula. The research finding shows that the debate technique in teaching speaking gives the effectiveness in students` speaking improvement. The result is ttable = (1.69) and tobserve = (11.01). Because to > tt, it means there is a significant progress in students` speaking abilities in accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility. The finding of this study has proved that debate is effective used in teaching speaking for eleventh grade of SMK Ariya Metta Tangerang. It is useful for the learners to improve their ability to speak English. It is also useful for the English teachers, especially the writer, to increase his knowledge in teaching speaking in vocational high school.
