It is rare that the release of an arbitral award is accompanied by a press conference. The Yukos case is unique in many regards—the highly complex political and economic circumstances that led to the rise and then demise of Yukos, the length and complexity of the proceedings,3 the magnitude of a claim of ‘no less than US$114.174 billion’,4 the Tribunal’s extensive factual and legal findings that Russia engaged in egregious conduct and a massive Final Award of damages of over US$60 billion and almost US$70 million in arbitration and legal costs. By any measure, the Yukos arbitration was mammoth.
