Abstrak
The purpose of this research is to find out the relationship between
students? interest in learning English and their reading comprehension at the tenth
grade students of SMAN 85 Jakarta.
The respondent population was 38 students at the tenth grade of SMAN 85
Jakarta. The writer took one class consisting of 38 students as the samples of the
research. The data are collected using interest test with 25 items of multiple
choices and reading test with 20 items of multiple choices and 5 essays. From
both tests, the writer analyzes the correlation and significance. From all the scores,
the writer tried to find out if there is a relationship between interest and reading.
From the table of Pearson?s Correlation Product Moment by df = 38-2 in
the significant standard 5% is got critical value rt = 0.320 and rxy = 0.969. It
means The result of the analyzed data showed that the coefficient of r- obtained
is higher rxy rxy > rt (0,969 > 0,320) so Hi is accepted and Ho is a rejected. From
the result of Pearson?s Product Moment, it is found that the coefficient of rxy is
higher than ?r? value from the table. It means that there is a significant correlation
between students? interest and reading comprehension.
The result of the research is expected to be helpful for the school
especially the English teacher to help them in increase students? reading
comprehension. The writer also hopes this research can be useful for the other
readers.
