 Abstrak
The main problem of this paper is whether the English Summative test of the first grade students of SMP Negeri 134 West Jakarta in the 2009/2010 academic year has been constructed of good item based on the criteria of difficulty level, discrimination power and distracter. The main purpose of this research is to find out whether the English Summative Test can be categorized as good test or not. The English summative test consists to multiple choice items. For practical purpose, the writer will analyze multiple choices. It can be analyzed using analyzed method. The methods used in this research are both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Quantitative method is used in this research to determine the difficulty level and discriminating power. Qualitative analysis is used to analyze further about the causes of the weakness of the test items. The result of quantitative analysis will be used for identifying the weak items that need revision. Revision can be done after analyzing these items qualitatively. The respondents of this research were divided in two groups; they were upper group and lower group. Based on the theories of J.B Heaton for each group the writer only took 27 % or 16 students. So, 16 students who got the highest score become the upper group and 16 students who got the lowest score become the lower group. Based on the proportion, the difficulty level and discriminating power were counted by using the formula of J.B Heaton. It shows that from 50 items that comprise 38 items with good category, 9 items with revised category and 3 items with discarded or eliminated category. From that information, it was concluded that the English summative test which was administrated in SMP Negeri 134 West Jakarta 2009/2010 academic year in general can be categorized as good test based on the difficulty level and discriminating power. It is expected that the results of the research could provide some useful inputs to the English teacher to improve the quality of the test.
