 Abstrak
Psychology appeals strongly to those who consider entering the field for several compelling reasons. One is its basic focus on human behavior? a topic relevant to each of us as individuals and in our many different relationships. At all ages, the psychological aspects of our behavior and that of others are key in how we perceive and experience our worlds. Another of psychology?s appeals has to do with its wide scope. Born out of both the experimental laboratory and philosophy, psychology is a science, yet it is also closely aligned with the social sciences and humanities. Psychologists may concentrate their professional activities in science, for example, conducting research from the full range of human and animal behavior. Or, they may focus on applied psychology, working with individuals, groups, institutions, and systems from various theoretical orientations. They might choose to teach psychology from high school through postdoctoral levels. Some psychologists combine two or all three of these activities at different times in their careers. Psychology also is attractive because of its direct relevance to society. Many of the world?s most pressing problems?such as crime and violence, disease prevention and treatment, lack of shelter, and ecological issues?can be best addressed through the application of psychological knowledge and research because they are tied so closely to human needs and behaviors. In the near future, there will be increasing demand for well-educated and trained psychologists. With advancing technology and concomitant shrinking of our increasingly complex world, psychology will be called upon more and more to address individual and societal needs. In responding, it will rely on bright people with integrity and ethical sensitivity.
