This article discusses the polemic on "popular novel" is considered as less qualified work because mostly they are for commercial purposes. On the other side , serious novels are considered as high quality works because they offer serious and deep thought. The recognition for thos two different kinds of work is also different. Awards and prizes usually go to the serious works because they they are considered as high quality works. This article analyses two novels, Terdedah by shahnon Ahmad and Kual Lumpur kita Punya by Abdulloah Hussain, as representatives of works by sastrawan negara who produce high quality works. The conclusion is that from both of the two novel the researcher finds out that the two novels show the fact that both sof them do not offer critical and deep thought. They can not advoid the tendency for sexism and erotism,the characteristics that are considered belong to the popular novels.
