Abstrak
The purpose of this research is to know the quality of the English summative test in term of difficulty level, discriminating power and the effectiveness of the distracters. The difficulty level was used to find if the English summative test is easy, medium, or difficult. The discriminating power was used to find if the English summative test is good or poor. This research used quantitative and qualitative method. The quantitative method was used to detect the poor items from the point of view of the facility value and the discriminating power. The qualitatives was used to find the causes of the weakness of the poor test items. The number of third grade students of SMAN 1 Mauk ? Tangerang who took English summative test were 80 students who were distributed in two classes. So, the total of answer sheets that had been taken as the population of the data are 80 sheets. The data was analyzed with the help of tabulation tables. The technique of the data analysis of this research were : first, arranging the answer sheets based on the scores (or making rank). Second, taking 25% of the answer sheets of the highest scores (called the upper group) and taking 25% of the lowest scores (called the lower group) and then summing up the number of the correct responses of each sheet on a tabulation table. Forth, analyzing the index of difficulty level and discriminating power, based on the appropriate formula. Fifth, identifying which items should be help or revised and then make some alternative revisions. Based on the analysis, there have been 24 (60 %) items out of 40 items accepted, 3 (7,5 %) are rejected, and 13 (32,5 %) should be revised. From the information, the writer has concluded that the English summative test of the third grade students at SMAN 1 Mauk ? Tangerang first semester academic year 2008 ? 2009 has been not good. Because only 32,5 % of the items need to be revised and 7,5 % of them should be rejected.
